The End of a Successful Swim Season

Swimming until the last second.

For many swimmers, their last time to show out was the regional meet.

The Bullitt East Chargers competed in the KHSAA Region Four Championships at the Ralph Wright Natatorium in Louisville on Friday, Feb. 8. The girls team placed fourth out of nine teams with 157 points, the boys team placed seventh out of nine with 20 points, and the combined boys and girls teams finished third overall.

One of the top performers all season, sophomore Grace McCarter, competed in multiple individual and relay events. In the 50 yard freestyle championship finals, she finished sixth of eight with a time of 26.33 seconds. However, the regional meet did not go as she had hoped. “I was hoping to go to state, but I missed it by 0.6 seconds which is very upsetting, but I know to learn from what I did and next year I know I have a bigger chance to make it next year,” said McCarter.

On the boys side, sophomore Kameron Mullins stood out in the 1 meter diving event with a score of 253 points, placing fifth out of seven in the finals, qualifying him for the state meet. “I felt like I was on the edge of making it to state, but I was still surprised when I got the news,” Mullins said.

The relay team also found success in the girls 200 yard freestyle relay. Senior Reagan Hardy, junior Emily Moats, sophomore Kelly Schmidt and McCarter finished third out of six in the championship finals for a time of 2:12.51.

This season the team is saying goodbye to many seniors. Grace Fluhr, Jillian Garrett, Reagan Hardy, Haley Burks, Haley Cox, Matthew McCarter and foreign exchange student Teresa Moreno. Many of these athletes have been with the team for most of their high school career and have created strong relationships with their teammates.
