Lilly Reid dribbles the ball as two Bardstown players come after her. Compared to the Fern Creek game two days prior, Reid saw that the team can win games but still have a lot of room to grow. “I think Fern Creek, like we were supposed to win that game, whereas Bardstown is really good, I mean they were pretty athletic,” Reid said.

The Lady Chargers have had an unusual week, beginning with an amazing 10-0 win against Fern Creek. Then, they faced Bardstown in a home game and lost 3-1. To round off the week, the girls went up against Bethlehem and unfortunately had another loss 10-0.

The girls started the week with a sweeping win at an away game at Fern Creek on Aug. 22. Top scorers of the night included Holly Higgs and Savannah Mooney, both with two goals each. Other scorers in the game included Hannah Rayhill, Hailey Rodriguez, Maddie Hall, Maddie Wheeler, Hailey Davenport and Ashley Burbrink. “It was pretty nice, it was fun because a lot of people who don’t get to play a lot got to get in the game and play, and I also think it was good because Ashley got to score and that her first goal ever,” senior Lilly Reid said. Ashley Burbrink, a junior and goalie on the team, was substituted for Holly Higgs and given the opportunity to score her first goal at the game.

Two days later, the girls had their only home game of the week against Bardstown. The team unfortunately lost the game by two goals. “ We still definitely could have won that game,” Reid said. Reid believes that the team just needs to continue building their bonds and chemistry to be able to play better and win against more difficult teams like Bardstown.

Both teams scored at the beginning of the match, with Reid scoring the point for her team. “I jumped up and I turned, then the ball hit the back of my head and went in the goal. It was pretty cool,” Reid said. Soon after, however, Bardstown got a free kick due to a handball in the goalie box before scoring once again. “The other goal was kind of a bad goal, we shouldn’t have given it up,” Reid said.

To round off the week, the team went up against Bethlehem in an away game on Aug. 27. In an unfortunate full-circle moment, the Lady Chargers lost the game 10-0. “Basically, Bethlehem kills us every year because they’re very good and those girls have played together since they were little,” Reid said. To build the team’s skills and understand how to attack more aggressive teams like Bethlehem, Reid believes that communication is the key. “Playing them, it showed us how much more we need to communicate and how much more we need to play together,” Reid said. Reid seems hopeful for the future of her team and understands what needs to be done to help her team be the best that it can be.

The Lady Chargers’ next game is at home on Sep. 7 at 5:30 p.m.
