Trumps Response To Catastrophe

Recent events in Puerto Rico have brought insensitive comments and actions from the U.S. president.

Puerto Rico has been faced with a catastrophe the past couple of weeks. A category 4 hurricane, Hurricane Maria, swept the island entirely. The winds reached up to 150 mph and the island has been drenched in feet of rain.

The effects of the disaster have left citizens without power, water or food. There is limited cell service and remote villages on the island have been cut off from everything. “A lot of them are without power and it was really hard for our family here in the states to get a hold of them (relatives) when it first happened,” said Ashlee Green, a Bullitt East senior who has relatives on the island. Two weeks later, residents are still struggling to access basic necessities.

In the following weeks, President Donald Trump took an interesting approach of tending to victims. Many were taken aback by him chucking paper towels into a crowd of victims during his visit to San Juan. Many social media users thought this was unprofessional of a president to do.

Later speaking to officials in Puerto Rico, he said something that many victims and citizens saw as insensitive. “I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you’ve thrown our budget a little out of whack because we’ve spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico,” said Trump. This sparked controversy all over social media with users saying this comment was unacceptable and should not have been said to those dealing with their loss. “I cannot believe what I just heard,” said Twitter user Gabbienain. In that speech, he proceeds to say that Puerto Rico should be “proud” to have only lost 16 people versus the thousands lost in Hurricane Katrina. Many also thought this was an insensitive comment and should not have been said.

Aside from the insensitivity of the president’s comments, Puerto Rico has gained confidence from their tragedy from the help and love they’ve been given. United States Coast Guard has delivered things like medical supplies to victims in need. FEMA has also stepped in to help and there have been countless hurricane relief fundraising events started.
