Losing the tournament was a bittersweet moment because the girls worked together as a team but it was almost as if their hard work didn’t pay off. Alayna Wells and Shelby Hatter are now better prepared for future tournaments. “I won my match by a lot which doesn’t happen a lot so I was really proud of myself,” said Wells.

Perseverance is key.

The girls golf team was recently defeated in the Two County Cup tournament yet did not lose hope or dedication and will continue to improve for the rest of the season.

The Two County Cup tournament was held Sept. 9 and 10 in which East lost by two points. This tournament was different from the usual tournaments as it was divided into two days. Sophomore Shelby Hatter stood out during the tournament after receiving scores that were lower than her average scores.

In the Two County Cup Tournament, the team lost against Meade County by two points. Senior Abi Huffman, junior Alayna Wells, Hatter and freshman Macie Brown played during the tournament in which they all worked as a team in order to place as high as they could. “We are all different which means we have different goals, so since I was proud of myself, I was fine with losing as a team,” said Wells.

Compared to past tournaments that were just throughout one day this one was spread out through two days. On Monday, there was a scramble where two players group up and form a team. Then, on Tuesday the scoring differed from a regular tournament scoring in which East got a three and Meade County got a five. “This was a very different tournament where we did a scramble Monday and did a different scoring Tuesday, but it was a group effort,” said Wells.

Hatter’s scores were immensely improved compared to past matches and tournaments this making her a standout. Brown also usually places high in matches/tournaments and this one was no exception. “Shelby got a bogey [one shot more than a par] which is really good for her since she has only been playing for two years,” said Wells.

Although the girls golf team may have lost this tournament they will continue to practice and improve where necessary for future matches and tournaments without letting this loss impact their morale.
