The population at Bullitt East has grown, therefore Bullitt East is lucky enough to have these exchange students from different countries around the world. Students with different cultures and lifestyles that are very unique, but how do they feel about this?
Coming to a new school and meeting so many people may be tough to comprehend, especially people you’ve never met before so it’d be tough to make new friends. A new experience is always nerve-racking, especially in a different country. Learning a new language and culture is extremely difficult to completely adjust to. Going to a new place may cause these exchange students to have ‘jitters’ or feel anxious but the most important thing is to make these exchange students feel comfortable and welcome at Bullitt East. Sophomore, Miguel Romero, and Junior, Raquel Reine-Vilches are Spanish foreign exchange students who are visiting Bullitt East for the 2025-2026 school year.
Coming from different countries around the world, such as Germany, Spain, etc. Having to translate from one language to another makes school more difficult. Just imagine the constant headache of listening in English then translating to Spanish just to understand what is happening.
The option to visit a new country is a huge decision for most people. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience a new culture, especially for the duration of several months. “Everyone told about how good the United States was, like a movie and everything, and now, like a few days I’ve been here, I’m seeing it.” Reine-Vilches described.
Despite the challenges that come with moving to a new country, Romero and Reine-Vilches are both very excited to be a part of the Bullitt East Community. “Make friends and learn English,” that’s what Romero said he wanted to do here, and who wouldn’t? Learning a foreign culture is very difficult, and maintaining social relationships can be harder. But with the right group of people, the latter can be quite easy.
Being able to experience a different culture is an exciting opportunity. For Reine-Vilches, the participation and viewing of sports is one of the many things she’s looking forward to this year. “I don’t want to go back to Spain, like, I want to try everything,” Reine-Vilches stated. Sports is a huge part of the Bullitt East community. Similar to Reine-Vilches, Romero is thrilled to participate in sports, such as soccer and tennis. Bullitt East is known for sports, competition, and connection to our community; let’s welcome them with open arms.
