Tiktok first came out in 2016 and hit the US like a storm when it was released in the US in 2018, since it has became a major news outlet, communications center, and source of income for thousands of US users.

TikTok has over one billion monthly active users worldwide as of May 2024. While we have apps such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, etc., TikTok has skyrocketed and become everyone of all ages go to doom scroll. Around 30% of Facebook, with 3.5 billion monthly users, is just re-uploaded TikTok videos. Fashion, dance, products, and other trends spread on TikTok, making it a hub for all kinds of people to come together and share 

 

Although, as of January 19, 2025, Tiktok has been banned from the US due of claims that the Chinese government could manipulate content and gain personal information from users. Now iti sl likely the US users version of the app will stop receiving updates, and those without the app cannot download it from their app store.

 

When Tiktok first came out, it was considered to be much liek theo ther popular media of Vine. This consisted of videos that ranged from memes, to the newest dance. Instead of resorting to Instagram or Snapchat, millions of people went to TikTok to create content. Spending hours of their day plastered to their screen taking in everything. 

 

Since Tiktok has been banned, people have resorted to many different things to consume their time, such as moving to Instagram or other platforms, while the content may be similar, Tiktok gave a different perspective for people to be consumed into the app, and since it was banned, people were enraged by the news.

 

Once President Donald J. Trump got back in office, he agreed that he will help to restore Tiktok for all users. This has sparked a lot of comments, as Trump was the original person to propose the ban. A lot of people are wonfdering if it’s propaganda, or false promises. People are hopin h the restoration comes soon, to save their businesses, their pockets, and otherwise their entertainment.
