Veterans Day was originally set as a holiday to celebrate the end of World War l. This holiday is now to honor United States veterans and victims of all wars. Bullitt East, as a whole, wanted to show their thanks to all veterans by hosting an assembly.

Veterans Day was originated on November 11, 1918 where it was known as Armistice Day, to mainly celebrate the end of World War l. Then, Congress voted to change the name because the U.S. had been in two wars since Armistice Day was first observed. President Eisenhower was the one to sign off on changing the name.

Ideally, Veterans Day was celebrated with parades and public meetings, now America celebrates this holiday by showing thanks to those who have served for their country and for its freedom.

President Wilson said, “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

Bullitt East wanted to show their gratitude by having the students and staff reach out to their family members and let them know there will be an assembly to honor their service, along with refreshments at the end. Erik Huber, assistant principal, said, “The biggest thing that we can take away is how important it is to honor those who sacrifice for us, to give us the freedom that we have and the things that we enjoy today. I only hope that this group of veterans feels the love and appreciate we have for them.”
