The club known as Project Unify here at East is helping special education students have fun while eliminating harassment at the same time.

Project Unify is a club that gets students with special disabilities more involved with surrounding peers. The leader of it is teacher Tiffany Darnell. It is currently having meetings fairly often and is working on new campaigns.

The mission statement of Project Unify is to provide unique students with the same opportunities to engage in peer interaction. “It makes me feel like I am really making a difference in the school with this program,” said Darnell.

The club’s motto is “spread the word to end the word.”In other words, it is to get people to stop using the offensive word that starts with “R.”

Some of the activities the students get to participate in are sports, social events, and peer tutoring. “These activities help students with and without intellectual disabilities find their voices by teaching them to become leaders striving for respect and inclusion,” said Darnell.

There are currently about 25 students in the club total, regular and special-ed. It started at the very beginning of this school year. The next meeting is Wednesday, November 23, 2016 after school. “We are currently working towards our R-Word campaign that will be introduced in March,” said Darnell.
