Dan Johnson was elected as district representative even after controversial Facebook posts.

Johnson, bishop at the Heart of Fire Church in Louisville, recently ran as the Republican candidate for the 49th district State House of Representative in Kentucky.

Running against Democratic candidate Linda Belcher, Johnson ended election day with a win as the new district State House of representative for Bullitt County.

After being accused of sharing racist photos on social media regarding former president Barack Obama and his family, Johnson gained a lot of attention from many opposing his views on the matter.

Johnson was found sharing a photo on Facebook of a chimpanzee with a caption that said, “Obama’s baby picture.” This among other posts found on his Facebook page have been considered extremely racist among the African American community.

“It wasn’t meant to be racist, I can tell you that. My history’s good there. I can see how people would be offended in that. I wasn’t trying to offend anybody, but, I think Facebook’s entertaining,” said Johnson.

Although shocked with the results of the election, Belcher told WDRB-TV that she won’t seek a recount vote.

This is not the only time that something Johnson has said or done was considered offensive to another. Earlier this year, the GLI banned Johnson from attending events with Louisville’s chamber of commerce because of remarks that he made about a female staff member that was considered offensive.

Johnson tries to defend himself once again not meaning to speak ill of another. “It is certainly not in my character to be offensive, so I do apologize if it came across that way,” said Johnson.

The Kentucky GOP lost faith in Johnson during late September as they withdrew their support for the republican candidate running for State Representative.

Even with all of the lost support, Johnson still managed to pull through with the popular vote, naming him the new district State House of Representative for Bullitt County.
