Over the past couple of months, rumors have spread that an NBA team may be coming to Louisville and other cities in the near future.

With the year just starting and the National Basketball Association (NBA) season in full swing, there are numerous rumors about the impending expansion and as it stands there is a possibility of an expansion, but at this time the locations have not been decided.

Louisville is competing against three other cities to get the new spot. With the NBA thinking of adding a team in Louisville, they have come up with enough money to start the team and find a new place to reside. While some NBA fans would be ecstatic about a new team in Louisville, college basketball fans might not be as supportive.

There are four cities that are in the running, but the number of new teams has not been decided. The four cities are Louisville, Seattle, New Mexico and Las Vegas.

Seattle has had an NBA team before, the Seattle SuperSonics, but Louisville and the two other cities have never held an NBA team.

Louisville does have in its favor that over the past three years the NBA has held a preseason game at the KFC Yum! Center.

The first game against the pelicans was in front of a sold-out crowd, but in the years after attendance fell to only around 9,000 attendance, however,  that’s not the only problem. Another problem with an NBA team coming to Louisville is the money that is needed to support a team and the needs that a city needs to meet to have one. NBA teams are based on money and need a large amount to get started. As of now, there are no companies or a person to come forth to support the new team.

Another downfall is that Louisville is a known college town. With both the University of Louisville and the University of Kentucky, most think if an NBA team was added it wouldn’t get much support from die-hard college fans and there are simply not enough people in the Louisville area to support such an endeavor.

If a team were to come to Louisville, they would also need a place to play and the only viable option would be the KFC Yum! Center. The Louisville Cardinals are the main occupants, but what if an NBA team was added? There would most definitely be schedule conflicts considering NBA teams play twice as many games as college teams.

Nothing is set in stone and with the end of the NBA season coming in April, it’s all a waiting game.
