Bullitt East leaders planned Red Ribbon Week at Red River Gorge.

On October 12th and 13th the United For East (UFE) leadership group, traveled to Red River Gorge to bond and plan events for Red Ribbon week.

The UFE group goes on an annual camping trip every fall with Chris Ryan, April Walker, and Savannah Richardson, the groups sponsor. Richardson was unable to come on this years trip because she was on maternity leave. Walker is filling in as the leader until Richardson returns in November. The UFE group invited Brian Brashear and Missy Speakmen to attend the trip with them this year.

Many students at East do not know what the UFE group is and does. The UFE group is the leaders of our school that committed to be drug and alcohol free. “UFEs (United for East) are a group of kids who have pledged to take a stand against drugs and alcohol.  They are a group that has been selected by their teachers and administrators as being a student who isn’t afraid to speak out against the abuses of drugs/alcohol by teens today. They are a group of students who are CHOOSING to make the right decision on a daily basis,” said Walker.

Red Ribbon Week is a week of drug and alcohol awareness. Every school is the nation participates in Red Ribbon Week. “I believe that our plan for Red Ribbon week is good.  It’s difficult to try to TRULY reach the hearts of teenagers on a topic of alcohol/drugs (which are more commonly used by teens today),”said Walker. Red Ribbon week will be held the week of October 19th.

Brooke Stivers, junior, has been a member of the UFE group for two years. “My favorite part about the trip was getting to spend time with people I might not really hangout with normally. It was good getting to know others and bond with the team,” said Stivers.

“My favorite part about the trip was probably getting to take the students hiking up to Natural Bridge. It’s so beautiful and something a lot of them hadn’t seen before,” said Walker.

The UFEs plan on going white water rafting in the spring.
