The group of people given the opportunity to speak for East is none other than the journalism class.

With a promise to publish eight magazines this year, the staff and editors of Livewire realized that they will need fresh writers and socialites to continue making the magazine better.

The message that the magazine sends out always depends on the people that create it. Not only does the message change every year, but the people change, too.

“You build a lot of relationships you would have never built if you weren’t in journalism,” said Layne Cutler. She took intro. To journalism freshman year, and has improved in her writing and communication skills every year.

In journalism, people branch out in writing, socializing, and managing time. The lessons learned in this class aren’t easy to put on paper.

“There’s nobody that has ever come out of here being worse off. You are going to learn something that’s gonna help you throughout the rest of your life. This class reveals a lot about who you are as a person, and teaches responsibility, and learning new technology. It’s different,” said Larry Steinmetz, journalism teacher. He has been interested in journalism since middle school, and believes that it helps develop qualities that are crucial in this day and age.

Reasons to take journalism are based on what someone wants to get out of their high school career. Time management and efficiency can be thought of as short term products of what journalism can offer a student. In the long run, it offers the opportunity of being a well-rounded person with a variety of skills that can be applied to any situation.

“Journalism is student-ran, which is different, and a lot more real life. You aren’t doing math problems you will never use; your building skills and relationships that will help you later on,” said Cutler.

If a person is looking to learn life lessons, and wants to try new things, then journalism is a class that may be good for them. The risks are outweighed by what can be gained with this type of environment and sense of capability given by being a member of the Livewire staff.
