Slam is a class that helps hold the school together.
Libby Jaggers, a junior on slam, is one of those people who help hold the school together.
Jaggers and slams’ primary purpose and mission is to “help add fun in a work-filled environment.” She dedicates her time, effort, and creativity towards slam. Slam helps coordinate homecoming, prep rallies, designs for school merchandise, etc. There is a process for how they decide the design, themes for dances, games for prep rallies, and more. The theme for our homecoming dance was heavily discussed and thought out to determine how it would be pulled off.
“Slam spends hours and hours on the decorations for everything, just for people to enjoy them and take a photo with them, then they get thrown out,” Jaggers added, “But that’s what we do, and we love it.” Joining slam helps people grow so many skills and qualities. Jagers said when she first joined slam she was nervous but ready to learn some crucial skills to help her finish high school. Slam gave her the ability to work together; she became an amazing problem solver.
Jaggers said, “Our group tries to make every event as inclusive and engaging as possible. We use social media, posters, and morning announcements to spread the word about events and spirit days. We also try to plan activities that appeal to different groups of students, like class competitions, dress-up days, and performances.” They want everyone to feel like they can take part in an activity they hold. They want students to be proud of their school.
One of their biggest challenges is coordinating around everyone’s schedules. There are so many different types of activities, sports, and clubs that people do that they have to work around. Another challenge that they have is funding. You might see people in front of lunch trying to sell you something, but it’s really slam trying to help fundraise for their future project.
If students want to join SLAM, they post a form at the end of the year for people to sign up. You will need a teacher’s recommendation to finish the application process.
