Sci Fi Club turns imagination into initiative, and players into leaders.
Bullitt East’s Sci Fi club allows its members to build stronger connections through shared interests and gives students a chance to take on leadership roles.
Sci Fi club has become a group where students take most of the control, preparing them as leaders and allowing close bonds to be formed through their time spent together.
At its start, Sci fi club was led by two different teachers before being taken over by Miranda Flannery. “I was just in the library making copies when I overheard one of their meetings. It sounded interesting, so I volunteered to help them out,” Flannery said.
While Flannery does take the role of club teacher, she says it’s the students who take charge. “The students are very involved. The leadership team really plans most of the meetings,” Flannery said.
One of those students is Camren Bland, who acts as the main leader of the Leadership team. With two years in the club, he’s gained the insight to guide others. “So I plan and lead the meetings. I make sure everything’s going according to plan, and I make sure everybody’s included,” Bland said.
Another student who has taken the lead in Sci Fi club is Nathan Jackson. Jackson had always been interested in Sci Fi, and even started the first Dungeons and Dragons club at their middle school. They joined in freshman year, but waited until sophomore year to take on more responsibility within the club. “I started the Dungeons and Dragons club in middle school, and I’ve always been interested in, like, Sci Fi, so I’ve always wanted to join,” Jackson said.
As the former leader of the Dungeons and Dragons club, Jackson watches over their weekend games, which are an integral part of Sci Fi club. He helps plan and manage their campaigns, which act as the story that is told over multiple game sessions. In order to have a successful campaign, everyone must have a say in what happens. “We’re trying to figure out, like, what everyone would want, like, how many people would want to join, and where we do it,” Jackson said.
Jackson and Bland, as well as other members of the leadership team, also help plan out other club activities such as movies and Lock-ins. These moments spent together have built strong bonds among those in Sci Fi club, which is why they love it so much. “The community is my favorite part, everyone gets along so well,” Bland said.
With the help of the Leadership team, Flannery, and other Sci Fi club members, a place has been created where anyone can feel welcome. “It’s really just a place for people who are a little bit nerdy, and it allows those people to come together and hang out. It’s just a nice place for people to feel welcomed and meet other people,” Flannery said.
Sci fi Clubs favorite moments together:
“Playing Mario Kart was a lot of fun, even though I lost,” Bland said.
“When someone came to one of our Lock ins dressed as Santa and handed out gifts,” Flannery said.
“Spending time with my friends,” Jackson said.
