Maybe New isn’t Always Better

Going for the kill.

The Bullitt East volleyball team hopes their new coach will lead them to victory.

With Ricky Hoffman taking over the coaching position this year, there has been a new change in pace. For the most part, the team agrees the adjustments have been positive changes. While the Lady Chargers have started their season off well, they still have some improvements that need to be made.

Senior Kelsey Coke said, “It’s a change of pace for us and his coaching style is different from our last coach, but we are adjusting just fine.” Due to Coach Hoffman’s different style of coaching, the girls not only had to change the pace, but they had to change the way they play on the court. The team have had a close bond throughout the years and that has really helped them, especially with a new coach this year.

The majority of the girls agree the modified coaching has had a positive affect. Coke said, “I think it has taught us different aspects of the game and gives us a new experience to learn from. We were a little hesitant at first, but one games started we’ve been adjusting together as a whole.” While it took some time the girls are finally becoming familiar with the current coaching style.

On the other hand, sophomore Lexie Fisher disagrees with how the way they are doing things now. “It is always a learning experience, but this is not the year for learning. This is the year we go. This is the best year Bullitt East could possibly have with volleyball. It’s early in the season but I don’t think we will get what we hope for this year,” said Fisher. She personally doesn’t believe this is what the team needs, especially with their potential this year.

The girls are definitely hoping for a winning season, and believe they have the potential for one. They plan to improve on the court and off. “I want us to improve on our passing and be able to run plays off of our sets. Of course I want us to be the best team we can be, but it’s not all about volleyball. I want me and my teammates to stay as close as we are now and be best friends for much longer than after volleyball season,” said senior Claire Feldhaus. This past week the Lady Chargers beat Oldham County, Spencer County, Shelby County, and Collins; And they were beaten by CAL (Christian Academy of Louisville). Next week they will be playing North Bullitt, Whitefield Academy, and Queens of Court.
