The third school board meeting of the year was held on Monday Nov. 13 at the Bullitt County Public School’s Board of Education.

A representative(s) from every school in the county attended Monday night, as they got the chance to speak about their school’s performance in the 2016-17 school year. At the meeting, each representative(s) answered three specific questions: What accomplishments are you celebrating, what are your areas of growth and what are your next steps to address those areas that need growth?

Schools had the option to bring their School Based Decision Making council as well, which Bullitt East did. The SBDM council consists of the principal, Chris Mason; Debbie Pitcock, Larry Steinmetz, Melissa Speakman and Mike Frye on the site based council; as well as the instructional coaches.

The meeting went from around 5 to 10 p.m., which was almost 4 hours longer than most meetings. Each speaker only presented their school’s data for around 10 to 15 minutes, but because all schools were represented, it was a lot to get through.

Bullitt East was especially focused on talking about the growth the school has had the past school year. “I’m about our kids, always,” said Mason. He highlighted their above state average scores in End-of-Course testing and the ACT.

Mason, however, did take a moment to highlight these things in areas of growth as well, as scores have dropped slightly in both categories from the 2015-16 school year.

As far as steps for growth, Mason highlighted the school’s implementation of CERT testing. It has been shown that students that use all of CERT’s components can raise up to three whole points on their ACT score, and this was an important point for him.

Mason walked away feeling lucky. “Everyone is very supportive,” said Mason.
