One candidate after another, the 2020 election is looking more and more competitive.

With elections creeping around the corner, many people are announcing their candidacy.

Several Democrats have announced that they will be participating in the race. While on the other hand, a small amount of people are considering taking the challenge to campaign against Donald Trump. Only time will tell who has the biggest shot of becoming the new president in 2020.

On March 14 2019, Beto O R’Ourke announced that he is joining the race for the presidential election. O’Rourke is a Texas congressman with a pro-immigrant vision that has represented El Paso for three terms. O’ROurke acts as a primary sponsor for “Honor our commitment act” which directs the department of veterans affairs to expand mental health services for veterans. He is also a supporter of immigration and many people see him as a reflection of Obama. There are, however, a few things to note about O R’Ourke. He was arrested for drunk driving in September of 1988 and lost the 2018 campaign for Senate to Ted Cruz. For some, this raises red flags. Overall, a lot of eyes are on O’Rourke because it’s looking like there is a possibility to win the nomination.

Another frontrunner for the race is Vermont senator, Bernie Sanders, a previous runner in the 2016 election. A quick overview of Sanders: From 2013 to 2015, he served as a chairman for the senate committee on veterans affairs. On Jan. 17, 2016, he announced his Medicare for all health plan. Sanders claims all Americans are entitled to go to the doctor when they’re sick and not go bankrupt after staying in the hospital. Despite losing the 2016 presidential race, Sanders announced that he is running for president on Feb. 19, 2019. Within the first quarter, Sanders raised eighteen million dollars.

To state the obvious, current President Donald Trump will be running in the 2020 election as well. In three months, Trump raised $30 million dollars for his reelection campaign. Foreign policy continues to be the focus of Trump’s campaign as well as his attempt to build the wall. After learning about the several kids separated from their parents at the border, many Americans are upset. Immigration is a concern on both sides and will be a big determining factor regarding the outcome of the race.

William Weld happens to be the first Republican to challenge Donald Trump in the 2020 election. Weld is the former governor of Massachusetts. On Weld’s campaign website, he talks about having “cut taxes twenty one times.” Because of Trump’s increasing popularity among Republicans, it will be a challenge for Weld to gain popularity. Weld is running because he does not like how Trump is leading the Republican party.

After taking a look at the top candidates for this election, it will be a close one. Only time will tell if Weld can change the game for the Republican party. The democratic front runners are frequently increasing in popularity as well. It is only the beginning of a long road to the election for these candidates.
