The town where kids go mysteriously missing is back on the big screen.
The famous franchise written by Stephen King is back with a mini series after the original movie back in 1990, got remade in 2017, and was a big hit.
The first episode takes place in Derry, Maine, with the time setting as 1962. 27 years before the attack on Georgie Denbrough that happened in the first movie. The producers have said in interviews that there would be at least three seasons of this series, and each season would take place 27 years before the last, to see how the town evolved. Episodes come out every Sunday on HBO Max at 9 pm.
The first season takes place in 1962, when a kid named Matty Clements goes missing and his friends try to find him. In the first few minutes, we see Matty trying to leave Derry and hitchhike. He gets picked up by this family, saying that they are leaving the state anyway. During the drive, Matty notices strange things happening, like the kids eating liver. Out the window, it says that they returned to Derry even though he watched them drive out, but what did it for him was when the pregnant woman in the passenger seat had a devil baby come out of her.
After that, the story continues four months later, with Matty still missing. After his disappearance, a girl that he was forming a friendship with started to hear very weird voices and Matty’s voice in her dreams. On the long journey to try to find him, she finds a few new friends who can help try to discover where Matty is and all the other kids.
The adults are blind to what the kids see. The kids in the town are trying to find where they belong and what group they belong to, so you get a bunch of different perspectives of kids trying to find themselves. After the young woman who had just moved into the town saw this, she tried to stop it, and every adult who was walking around the square looked at her like she was crazy for stopping it. Then a store owner responded, “Kids will be kids,” solidifying the idea that the adults are blind to everything happening around them.
This series takes place in the same town, in the same school, and with the same killer as the other IT movies. However, this series has a very different vibe than normal scary movies. This series explains what Pennywise is and how his path led to the Losers’ Club. As the series continues to make more episodes, you can see that they are trying to connect the movies by the characters’ last names, such as “Hanlon” referring to Mike Hanlon and connecting story lines by including the egg explosion that Pennywise made happen in the movie, the Paul Bunion statue being built, etc.
Overall, this series isn’t bad for trying to bring back the terrifying clown. The series overall is how Pennywise was evolving, and it still has Pennywise’s famous house, which we see later in the series, “The Barrens,” which is a famous spot in a nearby creek in the town, and finally, the same sewer system that the kids would walk around in.
