It’s not about how you start, it’s about how you finish and the Chargers finished strong.
The Bullitt East cross country team ended their 2025 season with impressive results at the regional meet, followed by a strong showing at the KHSAA State Championships.
The girls’ team finished 21st overall, while senior Luke Smith represented the boys as the team’s lone qualifier.
The state appearance came after a standout performance at regionals, where the girls’ team earned runner-up.
Senior Savannah Mooney placed second, followed closely by her sister, Caroline Mooney in third, helping lead a deep squad that saw six runners finish in the top 20.
At state, Savannah Mooney led the way once again, placing sixth overall. The team as a whole finished 21st among Kentucky’s best programs.
On the boys’ side, senior Luke Smith qualified for state as an individual. He represented Bullitt East in his final high school race.
Reflecting on the experience, Smith said one of his proudest moments came at state itself.
“I was able to follow the race strategy I had planned and stay focused mentally throughout the entire race,” Smith said.
Qualifying for state was especially meaningful. “I do wish I could’ve run with my team one last time there, but I was glad I got to race one final time for my high school career,” Smith said.
He described the meet as unforgettable. “It was amazing to conclude my high school cross country journey at the state course, surrounded by runners from all over Kentucky and in such an amazing atmosphere,” Smith said.
Reflecting on the season, Smith said, “The 2025 season was a great one. I improved in a lot of ways, especially by increasing my mileage.”
He also praised the team culture this season. “I’m so grateful to have been a part of such a great group. We grew not just as runners, but as friends,” Smith said.
As the team looks ahead to next season, things will be very different without this year’s seniors. The team hopes to build on the momentum they had this season as returning runners and rising underclassmen continue to gain experience.
The 2025 season showcased the Chargers’ determination and growth, setting the stage for even greater strides ahead.
