Girls basketball is beginning to prepare for their 46th season!
The Bullitt East girls basketball team is extremely excited to play this year. This excitement is primarily due to the number of new players on the team- transfers and younger girls. Most of these girls have been playing for years and plan to play later on in life, but this is their last year.
A lot of female sports teams have much less recognition than the men’s sports teams that are in the same field. However, this doesn’t matter too much to the players because they’re just excited to get back into what they love. Whether it’s for the first or last time.
“I think we’re going to be really good this year, and we play as a team really well. Which is a strength different from what we had last year,” Nora Bacon, a junior on the team, said.
Many news girls have come into this sport recently, and even fewer have returned. The team has many, many new players, and the majority of them are freshmen or middle schoolers, with only a few juniors and fewer seniors returning. Regardless of this setback, the girls are so excited to play this season.
“We are a very young team- I want to say that we have 10 middle schoolers come once they get out of school, and that’s really challenging because they haven’t been here the whole time so they don’t really know the plays or anything yet. But this season will be fun,” senior Mollie Johnston said.
Speaking of new players, the girls also have a junior transfer from Jefferson County this year. This junior all-star’s name is Mia Braffet, and she’s absolutely ecstatic to be a part of the basketball team! Braffet is extremely ambitious, accountable, and most importantly- good at what she does.
“For me, this season is really just going to look like proving myself, because I’m not coming in with any preconceptions or anything like that so I know I have to do my work to prove my spot on this team just like anyone else would,” Braffet said.
While on the topic of new players, let’s switch to the older players. Bullitt East is going to miss their leaving seniors incredibly much. The two seniors who are going to be leaving are Anna Tinelli, and Mollie Johnston. Tinelli has played the sport her entire life and plans to play in college as well, but she’s extremely sad to be leaving behind her team.
“I’ve definitely grown a lot just having patience on and off the court, I think basketball has really made a difference in my life regarding that. 3 years from now I’m committed to play basketball in college so playing basketball, majoring in biology, and becoming a PA is my plan,” said Tinelli.
