Due to pushback from the Bullitt County Board of Education and parents from across the area, the 2026 election poll locations will be changed.
A disagreement between the school board and county clerk Kevin Mooney began in November 2025. Mooney wrote Bullitt County Public Schools a letter discussing the original plan to use Zoneton Middle School, Mt. Washington Middle School, and Mt. Washington Elementary School for early voting in May and November.
During the 2024 presidential election, the schools were used, forcing BCPS to be closed on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. During the 2024-25 school year, Nov. 4 was marked as a Bullitt Day and Nov. 5 was Election Day, causing more instructional time to be reduced.
“It was probably the best election cycle, the best election that we have put on in my 19 years at that time as clerk,” Mooney said in an interview with WDRB. “So the plan worked.”
However, BCPS Superintendent Jesse Bacon, along with the board, fought back.
“That completely disrupts our learning continuum for our students and our staff but it also causes parents issues with childcare and having to find more coverage for their students on days that they wouldn’t be in school,” Bacon said.
The primary reason for the objection was due to early voting for the Primary Election falling right in the middle of state and Advanced Placement testing.
“We believe that there are other alternative options within our community that are available and possible for the clerk to utilize for the early voting period,” Bacon said.
Following the pushback, the Bullitt County Board of Elections met Monday morning to discuss new plans for early voting and decided to take the schools out of consideration.
“The model and the plan that was submitted right now in the state board of election’s hands is a good plan, in that it would take care of voters and the voting process,” Mooney said. “We ultimately are going to change it to something different.”
Mooney stated that he’s already exploring different options for early voting locations and will make a final decision at some point this week.
