The Lady Chargers want a student section too.

The RedZone Rowdies have received negativity from a few members of the girls basketball team.

One sports team has some members who are not happy with the little attention they are given. However, many of the other sports teams around the school rarely if ever even get student support. The boys basketball and football teams have always received the most attention and it seems unlikely that will change in the near future.

On Friday, there is a scheduled girl-boy basketball doubleheader. The game is at North Bullitt, which makes it a big county rivalry game. Traditionally the RedZone Rowdies only cheer at home games, no matter the sport. But rivalry games that are close tend to have the ability to draw East students to other schools. So the RedZone Rowdies twitter account tweeted out a notice for their followers to show up to the boys basketball game at 7:30. Leaving out that the girls play right before at 6:00. This has left a couple members from the team upset.

“For the last four years, nobody ever comes to our games. Even the bigger games, but everyone goes to the boys games. For example, the boys had an away game against Meade County the other night and we had a game at home but people were still talking about how they were gonna go to the boy’s game in Meade County. We did have a little bit of a turn out on senior night but we pretty much had to beg people to come. We have three girls who are committed to play in college and the boys don’t have any right now so we’re pretty good too,” said senior and girls basketball player Abby Rodgers.

There are other Lady Chargers who feel the same way.

“The RedZone does not support girls basketball. Even if a few show up at the game, there is no cheering to show real support,” said senior and girls basketball player Alyssa Peak.

Not all RedZone leaders agreed with their original tweet that seemed to downplay the girls game. A few of the leaders considered the girls game just as important and discussed it with one another after it was tweeted.

“I would love to side with the RedZone considering that I’m one of the leaders but I cannot sit here and say that what we said on the account was correct because honestly the girls deserve just as much support as the guys do. That’s what we’re all about or what we’re supposed to be about. We’re going totally against that by not giving the girls just as much support and not letting people know that they have a game,” said senior and RedZone co-leader Bryce Stewart.

In the history of the Chargers student section; their big events are home football and home basketball games. As well as any big region away game or away county rivalry. This leaves most sports out, including: golf, tennis, soccer and the archery team just to name a few. That also include the boys and girls teams of the same sport. Essentially the only sports that receive a lot of attention are the major two. The RedZone has attempted to draw attention to some of the sports that often times get left out. They have talked about both boys and girls soccer as well as volleyball multiple times via social media and by going over the announcements. The only problem with this however is that the average student is more likely to have interest in a basketball game or football than other sports simply because they are exposed more to that sport and are more familiar.

“I understand less school support just because you’ll have to drive out and it may cost some money if you want to get a cart and follow us around. You’d still expect to see a little support. If you’re not on the golf team you may not want to drive half an hour to watch something that you may not have a lot of interest in though,” said senior and golf team member Michael Harp.

The success and morale of all sports teams around the school could certainly be helped with more support. The likely scenario for the foreseeable future is that the teams who have traditionally seen attention will continue to see it. The hope of both the RedZone and other sports teams is to expand their support to include more teams which is something both sides can agree on.
