The Chargers laid it all on the mat as the season is ramping up.

The wrestling team faced some tough competition this past week at home and on the road.

East took on Valley and Iroquois High School on Wednesday Nov. 29. The team also hit the road on Saturday Dec. 2 as they competed in the Dixie Dual. East had a strong showing in both outings.

The Chargers battled the Vikings first on Wednesday. Valley put up a good fight as the matches went back and forth. East defeated Valley and awaited the winner of the Valley versus Iroquois match up. Iroquois handed Valley another loss and East faced Iroquois in the second dual.

East had many quick takedowns in the match and senior CJ Bynum had two pin downs. “As a team, we did really good against the opponents. We won against Valley who is ranked number 22 team,” said Bynum. After the matches East and Iroquois held multiple exhibition matches so they could give some of their wrestlers extra practice since it is the beginning of the season.

On Saturday, East traveled to Doss High School to compete in the Dixie Dual. East faced Valley, DeSales, Senica, Bullitt Central, Fern Creek and Iroquois. There were 14 teams at the meet. “We won third place out of 14 teams so that’s really good. But I believe we could have won first if we just learn not to stall as soon we get up from the opponents,” said Bynum.

The team still has room to improve as the season moves forward. “We need to attack as soon we get up. That was one of our main thing we need to do as a team, and the other is that we have to be ready for anything they give us to win,” said Bynum.

The Charger’s next match is against Fern Creek, Louisville Central and John Hardin on Wednesday Dec. 6 at Fern Creek High School.
