Snow, ice and everything nice.

On Monday Jan. 8, Bullitt County students had the day off due to rainy and icy conditions.

Days off due to weather are nothing new to students in Bullitt County. Snow, freezing rain and sleet are pretty common in the winter months so school cancellations are expected to happen. Although they are usually expected, snow days sometimes take students and teachers by surprise.

School cancellations can happen for many reasons in the winter months. Some of these can be freezing rain, snow, icy roads and temperatures below zero. As for Monday, there were icy road conditions due to freezing rain on Sunday night. Many people have mixed feelings when it comes to having days off because of snow.

Sophomore Halle Key thinks that snow days are good to have every now and then. “I think that every student needs snow days to just take a day off school and have fun in the snow,” said Key. Key enjoys spending snow days drinking hot chocolate and going outside to enjoy the winter weather. Although snow days are great during the year, they can take days off of summer break. “I’d rather have a long summer, I enjoy warm weather much rather than cold, there’s more stuff to do,” said Key. Key thinks that snow days are only really necessary when there is snow on the ground and this was not the case on Monday.

Sophomore Taylor Clemens does not think that Monday’s snow day was totally necessary and that at most it should have just been a delay. Although the snow day may not have been the best choice in some people’s opinion, there are many ups to behind the choice to call off school.

“They keep student drivers, who tend to be inexperienced drivers, safe on dangerous driving conditions,” said Clemens. Clemens says that although snow days can be relaxing, she would rather have less of them and a longer summer vacation. The winter season can be a long stretch for students and teachers due to various closings and delays.
