Choir students hit the right note at their performance.

Several choir students performed at the District Five Solo and Ensemble on Saturday.

Despite being nervous, choir students exceeded expectations at their performance over the weekend. Many students earned a distinguished or proficient rating at the Oldham County Schools Arts Center. Students were confident and proud of all of their hard work.

Most of the students were nervous about performing. “I am always nervous for competitions and auditions. I start shaking and get nauseous. However, once I start singing I gain an ounce of confidence. This, in the end, pays off,” said sophomore Jonah Brown. Despite being nervous, Jonah received a distinguished rating.

It was considered a be a big accomplishment to get a distinguished rating at this performance. “It feels extremely rewarding to receive a distinguished rating. It’s something that really allows you to be proud of what you do and realize all of the hard work isn’t for nothing,” said Brown.

This performance stood out from previous performances for choir members. “It was different because small groups practiced after school and had a group text so there was lots of personal responsibility. I think that’s good for my program as a whole because it feeds back into ownership and taking the feedback they get from the judge and incorporating it into our big ensemble,” said choir teacher, Carrie Gary.

By going to this competition, it benefited the choir members. “We’re one of the few high schools that go to this but I think it’s important for kids to get feedback from other people. Sometimes things I’ve said for years and years can be more helpful coming from a different perspective,” said Gary.

This performance helped choir members grow as individuals and also as a whole. “Overall, we were successful at the competition. It represents our choir and how hard we work together as well as how hard Ms. Gary and Mrs. Kerr work,” said Senior Burgundy Maloney. The choir is continuing to work hard and earn several distinguished ratings.
