Building champions before the first match
How the BE wrestling team prepares the mind and body for the season.
The team has spent the preseason learning that wrestling isn’t just about strength, it’s about showing up every day ready to push through whatever’s in front of you. Toughness isn’t something you turn on during a match, it’s built in the quiet, exhausting moments when no one’s watching.
“Be mentally tough and be aggressive, and be physical,” Jack Harrod said.
Each practice has become a test of toughness, with the wrestlers starting to carry confidence that comes from every bit of progress they’ve made. If they keep approaching the season with this level of grit, they will be ready for any challenge that steps onto the mat.
The team has been talking a lot about what it really takes to win, and the energy in the room feels different in a good way. There’s a mix of confidence and excitement that comes from what they’ve already experienced last year and what’s still in front of them.
“To win regions again and have fun,” Savannah Martin said.
This mindset has shaped the whole preseason. The wrestlers are pushing hard, but they are also enjoying the moments and having fun during warmups, hyping each other up and building the kind of chemistry that shows up when the matches get tough. If they keep that balance of focus and fun, they will give themselves another shot at the region title.
A big part of this preseason has been getting everyone into the work that happens outside the wrestling room. The team has the long runs, the late-night lifts, and all the conditioning that goes into training.
“Lifting, running properly, conditioning, and eating properly,” Ben Cauley said.
It’s become something the whole group has taken to heart. You can see it in how guys push through the last reps, how they pace themselves on runs, and how they’re starting to take better care of their bodies. All of that discipline adds up, and it’s already showing in how much stronger and more prepared the team looks heading into the season.
