Youngest mayor since 1892.
Zohran Mamdani, the 112th mayor of New York City, is the youngest mayor since 1982. The youngest is Mayor Hugh J. Grant, Grant was 31 years old when elected. The people of NYC have expressed their concerns about Mamdani being so young, and Mamdani responded to this in a video on social media before Election Day. Mamdani quoted, “You’re worried about a 33-year-old becoming mayor of New York City. And I want you to know, I hear you. That’s why this weekend, I’ll be making a change. I’m turning 34.” Mamdani turned 34 less than a month before Election Day.
There are so many interesting things about the new Mayor of NYC. The Democratic Mayor is the first Indian American and Muslim Mayor, who is also the first immigrant Mayor in modern times. Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, in 1991, but when he was 7, he moved to NYC West-side, Morning Side Heights, Upper Manhattan. Mamdani became a naturalized citizen in 2018.
Mamdani did his oath under the old city hall subway station. This happened right after the ball dropped; they counted down, said ‘Happy New Year,’ and then started up. Mamdani did this because it’s where it all started, and the transportation of NYC is the heart and soul of it all. That’s what was the first thing mentioned after improving the transportation, because that’s what keeps NYC running.
Transportation is one of the key things talked about in Mamdani’s speech after his oath. McGuinness Boulevard is the one reconstructing the city’s transportation. Boulevard wants protected bike lanes and reduced traffic lanes. Boulevard continues to advocate for his campaign promise for free city buses.
