Strong examples in the school hallways today, generation leaders and shapers tomorrow.
Bullitt East’s Beta Club and National Honor Society (NHS) is building a strong foundation of students that’s built on achievement, character, leadership, and service, which are the four Beta pillars. Through various service projects around the school and community, these members are shaping a better tomorrow. Every time they come together, the Beta motto is evident and bold, “Let Us Lead By Serving Others.”
How This Year Is Going So Far
“We have so many kids that are really going out of their way to find ways to help in our community and be involved,” Kelsie Wiedmar, Beta sponsor, said.
Last year was the beginning of Wiedmar’s tenure of being the sponsor, alongside Nicole Perugini, NHS sponsor after Brandi Molter, former leader of both. Because of this, everyone was having to adjust to this change and make the best of this. Now, this club is able to fully showcase who they are and what they stand for since they have a clean slate now that’s already been through a full year of changes. Lots of new leaders are stepping up and making a positive impact on the club and school as a whole.
“Mrs. Wiedmar and Mrs. Perugini are extremely helpful, not only in making that transition smooth but running the clubs seamlessly,” Lauren Sexton, NHS president, said.
What Separates BE From Others
“We’re constantly stressing how to be a leader and the impacts of serving, even in the quiet ways that no one sees as much, but still get recognized,” Wiedmar said.
Students that’ve been in the club all the way from freshman to senior year have been able to gain loads of leadership skills that are key for thriving in the real world. Teachers, administrators, and even district leaders have been key mentors to everyone in the club.
“Every other club has something you get out of it, but our’s is about giving back,” Sexton said.
With Beta/NHS being one of the largest clubs at BE, there’s always lots of hands on deck when it comes to service projects. This leads to a lot more ways to give back to the community with more students volunteering.
Favorite Service Projects
“Boo at the Zoo and Operation Christmas Child are definitely 2 of our most popular and favorite projects, and I always look forward to them,” Wiedmar said.
Boo at the Zoo is an annual event through the Louisville Zoo, where students dress up in costumes and pass out candy to families as they pass through the trails. Current and graduate students have always volunteered for this because it’s one of the most loved ones. 2 weeks ago, on October 16, the event was held for the 2025 season and went smoothly for both volunteers and sponsors.
“All we saw the whole night was just smiles and pure happiness from the students and kids as they walked through the zoo,” Wiedmar said.
This event is very rewarding and refreshing to see lots of smiles between the volunteers and families. Wiedmar praised all the participants for having a positive impact on the kids and helping make the whole night very fun.
Similarly, Operation Christmas Child gives students the opportunity to give back to the community by delivering packed shoeboxes of quality toys, school supplies, and personal care items to children in need across the country. This is a very heartfelt event because for many kids that receive the packages, it’s their first gift ever.
Goals For This Year
“I want to be able to show students that serving can be fun, as it’s not all work, and very rewarding all at the same time,” Wiedmar said.
Consistently striving for service and leadership, fun is one of the key factors that push and motivate students to continue participating. The work that happens behind the scenes is one thing, but the ending product and impact that comes through it makes everything in between worth it.
“I want students to feel like they have a say in what’s going on, because it can be hard at times with a club this huge and how we’re constantly growing in membership,” Sexton said.
As the NHS president, Sexton wants to make sure that everything runs smoothly, through every service project and meeting. She’s always wanting to hear various inputs on the club in general and how she can help make the experiences better.
This year for Bullitt East Beta Club and NHS is all about fun, service, leadership, and growth. Through a strong officer team and great sponsors, students have lots to look forward to through various activities to help grow character.
