Many Bullitt East students don’t know about the wonderful opportunity to learn financial management skills available at their fingertips.
The Charger Bank is a student-run bank located in the cafeteria that allows students to deposit money for various reasons.
It is a great chance for students to learn how to save money and get real-world experience in banking. As part of the financial services pathway, students get a chance to work in the bank and set them up for their future. You can start banking the charger today.
“When you deposit money, you earn interest on it just like a real bank. Interest rates help you make money in the future, and you can withdraw it at any time. The Charger Bank helps you save money to become more responsible and mindful of spending. “ Conner Kinslow said, vice president of the bank.
Interest is a percentage of the original amount that a borrower pays to a lender for a loan, or that a bank pays to a saver for a savings account. At Bullitt East, the Charger Bank is sponsored by Peoples Bank, which pays for the interest received. “It’s important to save your money. You get money back by the time you graduate. If someone put in $10 in their freshman year, by their senior year, they will have around $15.” Chase Litton said, president of the bank. The more you deposit, the more interest you will earn.
Around 10 years ago, the Charger Bank used to be able to give loans to students and teachers. Whether that be for dance tickets, lunch money, etc. Unfortunately, the bank can no longer do this. To overcome this challenge, students running the bank also take an online Jefferson Community & Technical College (JCTC) class to make up for the experience lost from giving out loans.
Charger Bank is a wonderful way for students working in this class to learn more about the banking side of accounting. “Students get to see the other side of the bank and the side of the employees and the workers. How the bank is run and organized. They get real-world experience to teach other students. In the first couple of weeks, we go over how to open and close accounts. We make sure everyone really knows how to do their position. We rotate positions every few weeks so everyone can have experience. By the end of the year, they become pretty fluent in their position.” Kyle Downs said, a teacher at BEHS.
The students in this class work with Mr. Adkins class a few times a week to teach them about money. It is a great way to work with and teach peers skills needed for the future.
Many students in this pathway report that it has helped spark an interest in accounting for the future. “I’ve always had an interest in finance, and I’ve had a lot of fun working in the bank. It makes me want to do it even more in the future.” Issac Lewis said, vice president. A degree in business opens up lots of opportunities in the future. It is a very broad pathway that will help teach you many skills needed for your future, whether that be in business, accounting, or not.
You can start a Charger Bank account in a few very easy steps. During Lunch A, you can go to the desk next to the sign that says “Charger Bank” and tell them you would like to open an account. If you aren’t in Lunch A, simply ask your fourth-period teacher to go to the lunchroom anywhere between 10:35 and 11. You must make a deposit of at least $5. Then, you will have a few papers to sign that verify and document the transaction. The whole process takes less than five minutes to complete.
